Just watching Lord of the rings, and decided to make a pixel art pic of Gollum. this is my second ever attempt at pixel art, so tips for improvement would be appreciated The original size is 150x143 pixels
As far as pixel art goes this is pretty awesome. I think that building a sense of depth through pixel art has to be pretty hard and you did it very well. I kinda wish there was more going on but this is fine as is. I think some color variation would be awesome. Right now it's very mono chromatic. I think more value in the background would be nice instead of just 2 flat colors. I really like that you used a full range of values. Another thing I also think some more detail on the character wouldn't hurt.
A very interesting piece as I have never heard of pixel art before. When looking at it in your gallery it really looks like Gollum sitting in his cave. But now, it has no form, not really. I do not know how to describe it. The green diffuse points first hit my eyes. You cannot make them out so much when looking at it in your gallery.
Sorry, I know that I am talking nonsense - but it is really strange to me and that is why I faved it
thanks and sorry but i dont have them on hand right now as im on holiday, but your best bet would just be look up pixel tutorials on here theres like no scene tutorials so i just used like pixel shading ones, etc and make sure to use a ref, it really helps. sorry i cant be more help
tips? The only thing I would say would be to add a "hero" color or two like some reflected light in places in the rocks and on the under side of Gollum such as a turquoise-y or glow-y color. But other than that--it's perfect!
I just call reflected light a hero color--it "saves" the drawing---not that it's bad--it's so good! It's a color you put in the drawing to help pull people's eye around the drawing and draw attention to certain places. --it's totally okay if you don't add it--you could have been intending a "mono-chromatic" color scheme and in that way you have made an exemplary drawing! It's just my old years from art college that urge me to tell you about "hero" colors--One of my old professors called it that and that's why I refer to it the same way--because I love the way it sounds. Great drawing though--I don't think I would even attempt a pixel art because it's so hard to make it look right. Hat's off to you!
